JHE The Omoluabi Rehabilitation Center in Ilobu, Irepodun Local Government Area of Osun State, is now a shadow of its former self, an investigation has revealed.

Created in 2012 by the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the program aimed to rehabilitate and care for people with mental disorders, the destitute and the homeless.

The rehabilitation center, according to the findings of OSUN DEFENDERserved as a temporary shelter for destitute people transferred from another State to be reintegrated into their families.

OSUN DEFENDER visited O’Rehab Center in Ilobu on Wednesday and noticed the place was locked and there was no sign of reuse.

The investigation also revealed that the O’Rehab served as a skills training center for those who were fully treated for their health conditions.

Destitute people and those with mental health issues were taught different skills combined with empowerment programs before reuniting them with their families to make them financially independent.

The program spanned eight years of Aregbesola’s administration. The last group of people who were treated locally were reportedly reunited with their families in 2019 at the start of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s administration.

However, the place has been closed since then, as Oyetola’s administration failed to continue the program.

In an exclusive interview with OSUN DEFENDER Yesterday, a former special adviser to Governor Aregbesola on youth, sports and special needs Comrade Biyi Odunlade noted that the Oyetola administration’s strategy and approach to social welfare issues is an aberration and against all logic of social programs.

Odunlade pointed out that Oyetola’s administration has abandoned all worthy projects undertaken by the previous administration, adding that all state social programs are now a thing of the past.

He said: “The Omoluabi Rehabilitation Center in Ilobu was established in 2012 by the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

“The Indigent Rehabilitation was a rehabilitation center established by the administration of Aregbesola with the aim of temporarily housing indigents transferred from another state for reintegration with their families.

“It has also been used as a place of transition for people suffering from mental imbalance who have been picked up from the streets. During their treatment for the hospital, they are temporarily placed there and after they are discharged from the hospital and while waiting to be reunited with their families, they will stay there until their families arrive. And for those who do not have family, they will be taken care of until a solution is found regarding their relocation as to whether they need to be found accommodation.

“On a regular basis, this place also served as a skills acquisition center for people with disabilities, people with mental disorders after their rehabilitation. Generally, people who need skills acquisition and empowerment are gathered there and are trained in different trades before being sent back where they will be reunited with their families so that they are not dependent on anyone.

“The impact of the program on society has been enormous. The program started in 2012 and continued till 2018 and as the current government did not put any bounty on indigent rehabilitation, the place was abandoned.

“Let me tell you this, the current administration’s strategy and approach to social protection is an aberration. It goes against all logic of social programs. The current administration of Governor Oyetola has abandoned all laudable projects undertaken by the previous administration.

All efforts to get a reaction from the state government failed as Commissioner for Women and Children’s Affairs, Olubukola Olaboopo, did not return calls or respond to the text message sent to her when filling out this report.
