Nevada City, California – From springs along the Donner Summit at the confluence of the Yuba and Feather rivers, hundreds have made their way to the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) 24e annual cleanup of the Yuba River which took place September 11-18, 2021.
This year’s event had two different phases: the Self-Guided Clean-up which took place September 11-17 and the Community Clean-up on Saturday 18. During the Self-Guided Clean-up, over 150 volunteers removed 2,600 pounds of garbage and waste. recycling of 12 sites along the South Yuba River, Deer Creek and Wolf Creek. These volunteers included students from SAEL and Forest Charter as well as employees from the Nevada Irrigation District (NID). The Tahoe National Forest has lent a special helping hand to areas of the watershed that were closed to the public earlier in the week.
“This event is a success every year because so many members of our community are committed to keeping Yuba wild and scenic,†said Melinda Booth, Executive Director of SYRCL. The annual cleanup is also a great way to round off the season for the River Ambassadors, who work all summer to educate the public about river safety and etiquette in the hopes of reducing the litter we find. every year during cleaning. “
The more than 250 volunteers who took part in Saturday’s community cleanup collected and disposed of an additional 10,000 pounds of trash at 13 sites including river crossings, landfills on Tahoe National Forest lands and abandoned settlements. Mattresses, illegal mining equipment and fire grates have been found along with countless pieces of micro-waste.
“For many of our attendees, cleanup is a year-round activity,†said Betsy Brunner, SYRCL Director of Communications and Engagement. “We are grateful to anyone who pack a little or a lot of extra garbage when they visit. Every little bit counts. “
